Board of Education System

Work related to education in a prefecture is carried out by the Board of Education, which is an administrative committee independent of the Governor.

(Tasks relating to the promotion of the Osaka Prefecture University as well as private schools were undertaken by the Governor. Since April 1,2016, the Governor has entrusted the Superintendent of Education with the promotion of private schools , so the administration of both public and private schools within Osaka Prefecture is promoted unitarily now.)

Duties of the Board of Education

The Board of Education carries out the following tasks.

● Matters relating to the educational curriculum, study guidance and career guidance of school

● The establishment, management and closure of public schools and other educational institutions

● Personnel matters for the staff of the Board of Education, schools, and other educational institutions

● Matters relating to the promotion of social education

● Matters relating to the promotion of physical education and sports

● Matters relating to the preservation of cultural properties.

The Board of Education also provides guidance and advice when necessary to municipal boards of education within Osaka Prefecture.

Education Budget for Osaka Prefecture 

The budget for the Osaka Prefectural Board of Education was approximately 533.2 billion yen in FY2017, accounting for about 17.3% of the budget for Osaka Prefecture.

Osaka Dream Education Fund

The Osaka Prefectural Board of Education solicits donations from the public to improve the level of children’s education. The received donations are used in initiatives to improve children’s academic abilities amongst other things.
